How Charlemagne brought the Roman Empire out of the Dark Age
Charlemagne did many things in his reign that helped in bringing the Roman Empire out of the Dark Age. He continued and systematised the administrative machinery of his predecessors.
Charlemagne permitted people who lived in lands that they conquered to retain their own laws, which he tried to intergrade into the laws of the Roman Empire. He created a system which allowed him to supervise his administrators, even if they were very far away, by having personal representives with lots of powers who regularly inspected the districts they were assignmed to. He educated the clergy and had great control over who was appointed to be a bishop and acted as the judge and jury in theological debates by summoning councils. Charlemagne encouraged trade and friendly relations with England and Harun ar-Rashid, who was the ruler of what is now known as Iraq.
Charlemagne's court in Aachen was the centre of the intellectual renaissance and the palace school, under the leadership of Alucin, became famous with numerous classes for children of all ages being introduced throughout the empire during the reign of Charlemagne. Charlemagne had multiple initiatives that aided the preservation of classical literature.
