Overview
The crusades were first called for by Pope Urban II at the end of the 11th century and still have effect in current times, over 800 years later. The crusades that are generally referred to were in the middle ages and were a holy war between the Christians and Muslims.
There were ten crusades in total;
1. The first crusade (1095-1099)
2. The second crusade (1147-1149)
3. The third crusade (1189-1192)
4. The fourth crusade (1202--1204)
5. The children's crusade (1212)
6. The fifth crusade (1217-1221)
7. The sixth crusade (1228-1229)
8. The seventh crusade (1248-1254)
9. The eighth crusade (1270)
10. The ninth crusade (1271-1272)
